Aadhaar card is voluntary but not compulsoty for Indians. People with other government issued identity proofs like Passport, Driving License, Voter Id Card are as good as with Aadhaar card. State governments or Central governments cannot make Aadhaar card compulsory before providing compulsory services.

Justice KS Puttswami (retired judge from Karnataka High Court) filed PIL against the complusory status of Aadhar card claiming it is complete infraction of fundal\mental rights under section 14 (right to equality) and 21 (right to life and liberty) of Indian constitution.

The UIDAI project Aadhaar card cost estimates are around Rs 50000 Crores. A severe controversy broke out over the validity of Aadhaar card when some state governments implemented it in their ruling state as complusory to avail benefits from the government.
